19th Century Italian Statuario Marble Sculpture of Kneeling Venus, 81 cm

An impressive sculpture in Italian statuario marble, executed around 1880. The figure depicts Venus (Aphrodite in the Greek tradition) in the classical pose known as the Kneeling Venus.
Statues of Venus were highly popular in the Roman Empire between the 1st and 4th centuries and were reproduced in many versions. The original type is attributed to the Hellenistic sculptor Doidalsas and later became known as the Bathing Venus. In the Baroque period, the motif was reinterpreted as “Susanna at the Bath,” a theme from the Old Testament, whose iconography was directly inspired by the kneeling Aphrodite.
The sculpture shows the goddess at her bath, with her body turned slightly to the left in a graceful and lively posture. In different versions, the arms vary in position – often with the left arm resting on the thigh and the right arm raised above the head.
A famous example can be seen in marble at the Louvre, known as Aphrodite Accroupie, as well as in other important European collections, including Naples and Rome.
This example has previously stood in a garden, has been carefully cleaned, and now presents with a beautiful patina that enhances its age and character.

- When goods and a suitable freight solution is agreed, the amount of the goods purchased is proceeded deducted from your account (unless the payment has already been made via bank transfer.)
