Constantin Hansen (1804–1880)
Constantin Hansen was one of the most important artists of the Danish Golden Age. He was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and traveled to Italy in the 1830s, where his encounter with classical art – particularly the wall paintings of Pompeii – left a lasting mark on his work. Hansen is especially known for his historical and mythological paintings, portraits, and the decoration of the Great Hall at the University of Copenhagen.
