Large 16th–17th Century Sukhothai Style Gilt Bronze Siam Buddha
A rare Sukhothai-style Siam Buddha cast in bronze with traces of original gilding. Created in Siam (Thailand) during the 16th–17th century, the figure stands 65 cm high (25.6 in) and is seated in dhyanasana (meditation) on a triangular base, with hands in bhumisparsa mudra, symbolizing steadfastness, perseverance, and enlightenment.
The depiction presents the Buddha in his youthful and slender form, characteristic of the Sukhothai style, which emphasizes elegance, grace, and serenity.
Approximately 500 years old, the Buddha has survived in remarkable condition, displaying a beautiful, natural age-related patina with preserved areas of original gilding.
Provenance: Acquired by Count Eggert Christopher Knuth during his Grand Tour to the Far East in 1862–63.
Label affixed to the reverse of the base.
In the possession of the Knuth family at Knuthenborg Castle, Denmark, until today. Count Knuth was also the creator of the park—modeled after English landscape traditions—which later became Knuthenborg Safari Park.
