Swedish Gustavian Chest of Drawers with Diamond-Patterned Marquetry, circa 1780
Gustavian chest of drawers of exceptional craftsmanship, originating from the Mälardalen region, Sweden, circa 1780–1790.
The chest is richly veneered with geometric marquetry arranged in diamond patterns and framed panels, executed in thick, hand-cut veneers of burl wood, birch, elm and mahogany. The decorative veneer work extends to all sides as well as the top.
The chest features three drawers. The two lower drawers are divided into three vertical panels, with the central panels veneered in burl wood and flanked by panels decorated with geometric diamond-patterned marquetry.
The top is veneered with diamond-patterned marquetry in burl wood and elm, framed by fine string inlay in birch and mahogany.
The sides are veneered in burl wood and framed with elm and mahogany.
This chest is a refined and elegant example of Swedish Gustavian cabinetmaking of high quality.
