Late 18th Century Swedish Gustavian Faux Tiled Stove Corner Cabinet, circa 1780–1800

€8,743

A rare and highly charming Gustavian corner cabinet designed as an imitation faience tiled stove — a distinctive furniture type rooted in late 18th-century Swedish interior tradition.

Crafted in pine and constructed in two sections with a gracefully curved front, the surface is painted to simulate tiled panels in a soft grey-white tone, delicately decorated with hand-painted blue floral bouquets and scrolling foliage. A moulded cornice with a wave frieze crowns the piece, reinforcing its architectural presence. The lower section features a trompe-l’œil painted iron firebox door, completing the illusion of a traditional Swedish stove.

The interior is finished in a warm coral paint and fitted with shelves and small drawers in the upper section, as well as a curved corner shelf below.

Sweden has a long-standing tradition of producing faience tiled stoves, and during the second half of the 18th century the highly efficient Swedish stove became widespread in manor houses and bourgeois homes alike. These tall cylindrical stoves were typically placed in room corners. To achieve architectural symmetry, a cabinet was sometimes commissioned for the opposite corner, designed and painted to mirror the stove. While serving a practical storage function, such pieces also played an important aesthetic role within the interior.

This cabinet is a characteristic and culturally significant example of this tradition, where furniture, architecture, and decorative painting merge into a unified expression.
