Large Italian Late Empire Carved Wood and Gilt Chandelier, circa 1830–1840
A rare and impressively large Italian Late Empire chandelier (diameter approx. 160 cm), finely carved in wood and preserved with its original gilding.
The gilded surface displays a beautiful, age-related patina that enhances the chandelier’s elegant appearance and historical character.
The chandelier is structured around a striking circular crown, richly decorated with classic Late Empire motifs such as laurel wreaths, palmettes, and stylised foliage. The carving is executed with great precision, giving the decorative elements a strong sense of depth and spatial presence. The overall workmanship reflects the skill of accomplished Italian carvers working at a very high level.
The suspension is composed of elegant turned elements and bead-shaped links, bringing the chandelier together into a harmonious and architectural whole.
The substantial ceiling canopy is equally richly decorated, forming a natural transition between ceiling and chandelier. The many symmetrically arranged candle arms terminate in elegantly shaped drip pans.
As seen in the final images, where the chandelier is shown installed within an interior, it is particularly well suited to rooms with generous ceiling height, where its proportions and warm gilding can be fully appreciated. Its scale is immediately perceptible, lending the space a distinctly grand and stately character as well as a strong historical presence.
The chandelier is fitted with a total of 40 candle arms, arranged in two concentric tiers with 24 arms on the outer ring and 16 on the inner ring, creating a balanced and visually rhythmic composition.
The chandelier can be electrified if required, and we recommend that any electrification be carried out in accordance with local standards, without compromising the original appearance.
