Eugène de Sala, “Germaine,” Surrealist Ink Portrait, Paris, ca. 1920–30
Eugène de Sala (1899–1987)
Surrealist female portrait executed in dark brown ink on paper. Signed “de Sala” and inscribed “Germaine” in the lower right, likely referring to the model.
The work is believed to date from circa 1920–30 and relates stylistically to the modernist movements that shaped the Paris art scene during the interwar period. With a light yet confident hand, de Sala creates a stylized and expressive portrait in which form and line suggest the kind of Cubist-inspired figure simplification associated with the period, including works by Pablo Picasso.
The restrained palette and calligraphic line lend the composition both elegance and psychological presence.
Professionally framed with mat and glass.
