Rare 18th Century Tibetan Ritual Mahakala Mask in Carved Wood
Rare Tibetan Mahakala mask from the 18th century, hand-carved in pine with remnants of the original black, red, and earth-toned pigments. The surface displays a beautiful, naturally aged patina consistent with its age.
The mask represents Mahakala, one of the principal protective deities (dharmapala) in Tibetan Buddhism. Regarded as a wrathful manifestation of an enlightened being, Mahakala serves as a guardian of the Buddhist teachings and monastic community. The fierce expression symbolizes the power to dispel ignorance and negative forces.
The mask is carved with pronounced horns — the central element articulated and movable — rounded, protruding eyes, and an open mouth revealing teeth. The bold facial features and dramatic expression are characteristic of traditional depictions of Mahakala in Tibetan ritual art.
The reverse shows the original hollowing and suspension attachment.
Tibet, 18th century.
