Knud Kyhn - Monumental One-of-a-Kind Stoneware Owl for Royal Copenhagen, circa 1925

€9,150

Knud Kyhn (1880-1969)

Impressive and rare large-scale (H: 61 cm / 24 in) unique stoneware sculpture of a seated horned owl, modeled by Knud Kyhn for Royal Copenhagen. The piece is executed in richly textured stoneware and finished with the characteristic Sung glaze, creating a vibrant surface with deep brown, golden, and subtly metallic tones.

The owl is rendered with a strong, sculptural presence and an almost architectural form, combined with finely hand-modeled feather details. It is a striking example of Kyhn’s distinctive ability to merge naturalism with a refined sense of form and monumentality.

This unique piece dates from circa 1924–1935, a pivotal period in Danish ceramic history.
During these years, Knud Kyhn (1880–1969) was a central figure at Royal Copenhagen, contributing to a major artistic renewal of the manufactory. Working alongside artists such as Jais Nielsen, Kyhn helped develop a more modern and expressive approach to ceramics, leading up to the landmark Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925.
This period marked Royal Copenhagen’s transition into a more experimental and sculptural direction, making works from this era particularly sought after today.

Kyhn is widely recognized as one of Denmark’s most important ceramic artists, especially known for his powerful and expressive animal figures, which combine a deep understanding of form with exceptional glazing techniques.

A highly decorative and sculptural statement piece, equally suited for modern, minimalist interiors as well as more classic or eclectic settings.
