Mogens Balle (1921-1988)
Expressive and vividly coloured watercolour by the Danish artist Mogens Balle, one of the prominent figures associated with the CoBrA movement and the post-war Scandinavian avant-garde.
Executed in Balle’s characteristic spontaneous and imaginative style, the composition combines abstract forms with suggestive figurative elements.
Two face-like shapes emerge from a dynamic interplay of bold brushwork and layered colour, creating a work that feels both energetic and poetic.
Strong reds, blacks, whites and blues dominate the composition, lending the piece a striking visual presence.
The work is signed lower right and presented behind glass with a mount in a silver-patinated wooden frame. A fine example of Balle’s distinctive visual language, reflecting the creative freedom, experimentation and expressive force that became hallmarks of the CoBrA movement.
