Chinese Red Lacquer Scroll Cabinet, Shanxi, Qing Dynasty, circa 1800–1820
Freestanding Chinese scroll cabinet in the Qing style, crafted from elmwood with its original thick red lacquer and an exceptionally beautiful, age-related patina.
The lacquer displays pronounced craquelure, wear and deep reddish-brown tones, creating a rich and highly characterful surface. The red lacquer continues across the back of the cabinet, which is unusual and allows the piece to be placed freestanding in a room.
A pair of large panelled doors with long brass fittings opens to an interior fitted with a shelf and a narrow removable centre post. Removing the post opens the full width of the cabinet, making it easier to accommodate larger objects and scrolls.
The profiled base is decorated with three recessed panels, while the simple, substantial construction reflects the cabinet's original function as a storage piece.
This type of cabinet was used for storing, among other things, paper scrolls for Chinese calligraphy and ink painting.
