Bronze sculpture by the German sculptor Christoph Voll, depicting a standing woman carrying a child on her back.
The sculpture is modelled with a strong, relatively rough surface, clearly showing traces of the artist's modelling. The woman leans slightly forward beneath the weight of the child, who holds on around her shoulders.
Women and children are recurring subjects in several of Voll's works from this period.
Executed in light brown patinated bronze and signed C. Voll on the base.
The work is documented as “Stehende Frau mit Kind” (WV 166) in the literature on Christoph Voll.

About Christoph Voll
Christoph Voll (1897-1939) was a German sculptor and graphic artist and a notable figure in German art during the interwar period. His sculptures are often characterised by a simple and powerful approach to form, combined with a strong attention to the individual and the character of his subjects.
Voll had a close relationship with Edvard Munch. After arriving unannounced to visit Munch in Norway and showing him his work, Voll earned Munch's respect. Munch praised his sculptures for their “primal force and deep inner calm.”
Voll was married to a Danish woman and maintained close ties to Denmark through his family. He died in Karlsruhe in 1939, at the age of just 42, and was buried in Oksby, Denmark, where his descendants still live.
Provenance
The sculpture comes directly from Christoph Voll's descendants and has formed part of the artist's family collection.
According to the family's account, the work was among a larger group of Voll's sculptures intended for an exhibition in Oslo in 1939, with Edvard Munch among its initiators. The plans were abandoned at the outbreak of the war due to fears that the works might be seized by the Nazi regime, which was strongly opposed to modern art.
The collection was instead brought to safety in Denmark, where the sculptures were stored in the basement of Christiansborg Palace during the war before later being returned to the artist's family.
