The relief is the first in the series The Ages of Man and the Seasons, in which Thorvaldsen connects the four stages of human life with the four seasons: childhood with spring, youth with summer, adulthood with autumn, and old age with winter.
In Childhood or Spring, a young female figure is depicted surrounded by children and flowers. The flowers and floral wreath associate the scene with spring and emphasize the connection between the beginning of the year’s cycle and childhood as the beginning of human life.
Cast from the original at the Thorvaldsen Museum in the early 20th century and executed in the same size as Thorvaldsen’s original model.
