Circular relief in white-painted plaster after Thorvaldsen’s Youth or Summer from 1836.
The relief is the second in the series The Ages of Man and the Seasons, in which Thorvaldsen connects the four stages of human life with the four seasons: childhood with spring, youth with summer, adulthood with autumn, and old age with winter.
n Youth or Summer, youth is represented by a young couple standing closely together, surrounded by the grain of the harvest. Beside them, a young woman kneels among the harvested sheaves, while the young man holds a sickle. The grain and sickle connect the scene with summer, while the young couple represents youth and love.
Cast from the original at the Thorvaldsen Museum in the early 20th century and executed in the same size as Thorvaldsen’s original model.
