Bertel Thorvaldsen “Manhood or Autumn”, circular white-painted plaster relief
Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844)
Circular relief in white-painted plaster after Thorvaldsen’s Manhood or Autumn from 1836.
The relief is the third in the series The Ages of Life and the Times of the Year, in which Thorvaldsen connects the four stages of human life with the four seasons: childhood with spring, youth with summer, manhood with autumn, and old age with winter.
In Manhood or Autumn, the young couple from the summer motif have become a family. The woman sits nursing their child, while the man returns from the hunt accompanied by his dog and carrying game over his shoulder. In his hand he holds a bunch of grapes picked from the vine growing beside the house. The grapes and fruits of the harvest connect the scene with autumn, while the family and domestic setting represent manhood and the established stage of life.
Cast from the original at the Thorvaldsen Museum in the early 20th century and executed in the same size as Thorvaldsen’s original model.
