Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007).
Pair of JH 503 armchairs, also known as The Round Chair or The Chair, designed in 1949 and executed by cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen.
Crafted in solid teak with Wegner’s characteristic sculptural backrest continuing seamlessly into the curved armrests. The seats have been newly upholstered in light beige Alcantara.
Carefully refinished. Both chairs stamped Johannes Hansen Copenhagen Denmark and bearing the maker’s mark underneath the seat.
The JH 503 is among Hans J. Wegner’s most celebrated designs and gained international recognition when the model was used during the televised presidential debate between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon in 1960. In the United States, it subsequently became widely known simply as The Chair.
Designed in 1949. These examples were produced in the 1950s.
