Large Chinese Painter’s and Calligraphy Table, Qing Style, circa 1840
Large Chinese work and calligraphy table, also known as a painter’s table, in Qing style.
Crafted from elmwood with its original thick black-brown lacquer finish, sensitively repolished to enhance the beautiful, naturally aged patina with craquelure, wear and warm reddish-brown tones showing through the dark lacquer in places, giving the table a rich and characterful appearance.
Large rectangular tabletop with a moulded edge, raised on a simple frame with straight aprons and four substantial square legs.
Tables of this type were traditionally used for Chinese calligraphy and ink painting, with the generous work surface providing ample space for paper and scrolls.
With its generous proportions and practical height, the table is equally well suited for use as a dining table today.
