Antique Chinese Stacking Box, Shanxi Province, 1780-1820
A portable stacking box featuring five separate tiers, crafted from limewood and originally coated in black lacquer. Remnants of the lacquer are still visible, lending the container a stunning patina that is further enhanced by the lacquered surface finish. Original forged iron fittings add both practicality and character.

Traditionally, stacking boxes like this were used to transport and store food during ceremonial or festive occasions, such as weddings, religious offerings, or other special events. They were also practical for storing and transporting food items from the market.
