Regence Cabinet from St. Croix, Former Danish West Indies (sold to the USA in 1917, now known as the "US Virgin Islands").
This elegant cabinet is crafted from solid Cuban mahogany with intricate satinwood inlays. Decorative details include an urn-shaped vase beneath the top molding and a single floral motif on the base, both skillfully inlaid with satinwood, adding a refined contrast to the rich mahogany. The two doors feature original, hand-carved keyhole escutcheons, while the center section is adorned with classic fluted details. The top molding is removable, and a later mirror has been mounted on the inside of one of the doors.
The cabinet rests on gracefully curved saber legs, reflecting a strong French influence. Furniture from the Danish West Indies is known for its use of locally sourced Cuban mahogany, with the back often made from a simpler, more economical grade of mahogany. This cabinet is a fine example of the craftsmanship from the Danish West Indies.
