Rare Pair of Louis XVI Commodes in Cuban Mahogany with Carrara Marble Tops, Altona c. 1780

A rare pair of Louis XVI commodes from Altona, crafted in solid Cuban mahogany with beautiful grain patterns. Each features three gently curved drawers with original gilt bronze handles and fluted detailing between the drawers. The sides are adorned with half-round pilasters, also with gilt fluting, and the commodes rest on legs ending in small animal paw feet. The tops are original white Carrara marble with profiled edges. Likely a unique commission piece.
Altona, circa 1780.
History: Altona, once connected to Hamburg, was part of Denmark (Schleswig) until 1864. Some of the finest furniture in Denmark was crafted in Altona and Copenhagen, with Altona designs often displaying notable English influence.
