19th Century Chinese Black Lacquer Calligraphy Table, Jiangsu Province, Circa 1840
Black Lacquered Calligraphy Table with Original Finish.
This elegant calligraphy table features its original black lacquer and a classic frame-and-panel construction. The corners and joints display natural wear, revealing the lighter underlayer of lacquer, which adds character and authenticity to the piece.
The table boasts a thick tabletop with a profiled edge, supported by a sturdy apron and straight, square legs with finely profiled details.
Jiangsu Province, circa 1840.
Originally used as a calligraphy table (worktable), it was designed for laying out paper and performing calligraphy or other artistic tasks. This type of table is also highly versatile and well-suited as a dining or work table. In traditional Chinese culture, round or square tables were often preferred for dining, while long tables like this were reserved for more practical or creative purposes.
