Victor-Philippe François Lemoine-Benoît (b. 1802), France.
Oil on panel depicting a fantastical aerial vessel, with a large red balloon carrying a ship-like gondola with sails, ascending above a gathered crowd. Smaller balloons appear in the distance, while elegantly dressed spectators watch the ascent from the grounds below.
Hot air balloons were a recurring subject in the work of Lemoine-Benoît, who worked in Paris and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1831. Much of his known oeuvre centres on balloon flight and the spectacular ascents that had fascinated the public since the pioneering flights of the Montgolfier brothers in the late 18th century.
Inscribed lower left “La Gondole, vaisseau aérien”, referring to the aerial vessel depicted in the painting. Signed lower right.
