Early 19th-century Mermaid Figurehead from a Northern European Ship
Figurehead of a mermaid from a Northern European ship, circa 1820-1830.
The figure is crafted from pine wood and painted with original polychrome colors. The mermaid boasts a well-preserved patina that accentuates the original details and colors. She features long, flowing blue tail fins and golden hair styled in a bun. Her torso is nude but adorned with large, detailed wings that have a natural, feather-like appearance. The artistic carving work showcases the craftsmanship skill of that period. Must be seen in person to fully appreciate, as the photos fail to capture the full elegance and intricate details of the figure
The figure is impressively sized, standing 141 cm tall, 50 cm wide, and 49 cm deep.
Provenance: Danish private collection. It is rare to find such a beautifully preserved and original example.
