Nikolai Ivanovich Lieberich (1828–1883)
An impressive cast iron sculpture of a standing bear beside a tree trunk, after a model by the Russian sculptor Nikolai Ivanovich Lieberich.
The sculpture was cast at the renowned Kasli Foundry in Russia between 1870 and 1880, known for its refined and highly detailed cast iron works during the 19th century. The piece bears the artist’s signature on the base, along with foundry stamps on the underside.
It features a rich, original dark patina and showcases exceptional craftsmanship in the texture of the fur, the dynamic posture, and the naturalistic composition.
The model is based on a historical event in which the bear was hunted and killed by Tsar Alexander II near the village of Lisino on March 9, 1865.
