18th Century Chinese Ming Style Elmwood Cabinet
A beautiful Chinese cabinet from the 18th century, crafted in elmwood in classic Ming style.
The front features a pair of doors with profiled frames and single-panel inserts, carved from solid wood. The vertical center post can be removed for easy access to the cabinet’s full width. Below are three drawers, while the interior includes a shelf with two profiled drawers as well as two later adjustable shelves.
The sides are built with double panels, still showing traces of the original black lacquer. Originally, the entire cabinet was lacquered in black. During the Cultural Revolution, many fine pieces were redistributed to ordinary families and placed in everyday use—likely the case with this cabinet as well. Over time, the lacquer wore naturally, leaving the elmwood with a warm, glowing surface and an authentic patina that beautifully reflects its age and history.
