Pair of Chinese Qing Dynasty Red Lacquer Cabinets with Original Decoration, ca. 1830
A pair of cabinets in red-lacquered elm, richly decorated and exceptionally well-preserved.
The motifs are executed in gold leaf on lacquer – a classic Chinese decorative technique – depicting treasured objects such as vases with flowers, trays of fruit, incense burners, scholar’s chests, and kang tables.
Along the frames, inscriptions wish for long life, luck, and prosperity, finely rendered with remarkable detail and craftsmanship.
The lower panels show a young Buddha surrounded by dragons, regarded in Chinese tradition as protective and benevolent beings, encircled by flowers and foliage.
The sides are finished in burgundy lacquer with simple decoration, while the inner-facing sides remain plain, as was customary for cabinets placed closely together.
The doors retain their original patinated brass fittings. The interiors are fitted with shelves and compartments, including a lift-up panel in the base revealing a hidden storage space.
A highly decorative and beautifully crafted pair of cabinets from Shaanxi province, dating to the Qing Dynasty, ca. 1830–1840.
