Large porcelain figure group produced by Royal Copenhagen, model no. 1132. Executed in porcelain and decorated in underglaze colours. The work depicts a man and a woman by the sea, designed in 1889 by Swedish sculptor Theodor Lundberg (1852–1926). Height approx. 47 cm. First quality, flawless condition.
Context:
The original model for The Wave and the Beach (Vågen och stranden) was created in plaster in 1897 and is preserved at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. On commission from King Oscar II, the sculpture was later executed in marble for the Royal Palace in Stockholm, with a second marble copy donated to the Nationalmuseum.
Royal Copenhagen subsequently produced this porcelain version, regarded as one of the factory’s most ambitious figure groups of the period.
