Austrian Baroque Secretary Cabinet in Walnut with Marquetry, ca. 1700–1730
A highly impressive and architecturally refined Austrian Baroque secretary cabinet from the first half of the 18th century.
Crafted to an exceptional standard, veneered with thick, hand-cut walnut, and enriched with maple and ebony.
The drawers, door, and sides are elegantly executed in walnut with sophisticated marquetry in geometric patterns of maple and ebony, creating a striking yet harmonious overall appearance.
The cabinet is well-proportioned and constructed in two sections.
The upper section features a curved cornice and a centrally positioned door, flanked by a total of ten small drawers—five on each side—all with shaped fronts and original fittings. A refined feature is the internal locking system, allowing the drawers to be locked simultaneously.
Beneath the door is a wide drawer with a curved front, while the interior reveals a spacious cupboard with shelving.
The lower section has a sloping fall-front opening to a writing surface covered in original leather. Behind the fall-front is a thoughtfully arranged interior with smaller convex and concave drawers and open compartments, making it ideal as both a writing desk and cabinet piece.
Below are three large, gracefully curved drawers with richly profiled and inlaid fronts.
The decoration consists of geometric marquetry in contrasting woods, characteristic of Austrian Baroque craftsmanship.
he piece retains its original gilt bronze mounts, locks, and keys.
Presented in very well-preserved original condition, with a light repolish.
Austria, ca. 1700–1730.
