Artus Van Briggle for Van Briggle Art Pottery Art Nouveau Vase, 1902
Early American Art Nouveau vase designed by Artus Van Briggle (1869–1904) for Van Briggle Art Pottery and made in Colorado Springs in 1902.
The vase has a distinctive organic form with a broad, rounded body and tall, slender neck. The surface is modelled with stylized leaf motifs extending upwards along the neck, emphasizing the sculptural, naturalistic character of the design.
Executed in ceramic with a beautiful matte glaze in variegated shades of green and olive green.
Signed and marked underneath with the Van Briggle double AA logo, VAN BRIGGLE, shape number 104 and the date 1902.
Van Briggle Art Pottery was founded in Colorado Springs in 1901 by Artus Van Briggle and his wife Anne Van Briggle (1868–1929), and became particularly renowned for its distinctive matte glazes and organic Art Nouveau designs.
