Elegant Empire Secretaire with Intarsia and Palace Façade, Copenhagen c. 1810
Architectural and elegant Empire secretaire, crafted to a high standard with many refined intarsia details. Made by a Copenhagen cabinetmaker, a member of the guild, circa 1810.
The secretaire is composed of two sections. The upper cabinet has two drawers – a large one bordered with striped intarsia in light maple, above a smaller drawer with detailed satinwood inlays. The top features intricate intarsia work in walnut, satinwood, and maple. Sides are shaped like arched colonnades, with a center section flanked by three columns with chain motifs and a fan-shaped ornament above.
The lower section has a fall-front writing surface with a recessed semicircle framed by striped intarsia. The sides are adorned with light inlays at the top and bottom, with a dark walnut semicircle at the base.
Behind the writing flap: numerous drawers in light maple with intarsia in satinwood and walnut. The central section is crafted as a neoclassical palace entrance with stairs, gate, windows, and columns – a stunning example of fine marquetry.
A masterpiece of elegant design and exquisite craftsmanship.
