The purpose of cookies is to enable the site to remember your preferences (such as user name, language, etc.) for a certain period of time. That way, you don’t have to re-enter them when browsing around the site during the same visit.
A cookie is not a program and does not contain viruses.

How long are cookies stored on my computer or mobile device?

There are two types of cookies: Session Cookies and Persistent Cookies.

Persistent Cookies are stored on a user’s device to help remember information, settings, preferences, or sign-on credentials that a user has previously saved.
These cookies have an expiration date issued to it by the webserver. Basically, this type of cookie is saved on your computer so when you close it and start it up again, the cookie is still there.

Session Cookies, also called Non-Persistent Cookies or Temporary Cookies, are stored in memory and never written to the disk.  Session cookies remain active as long as the browser remains active – once the browser is closed, the cookies vanish.

How do you avoid cookies?

Most browsers automatically accept cookies. If you do not wish to receive cookies, you can block all cookies, delete existing cookies from your hard drive or receive a warning before a cookie is saved. Click here to get instructions on how to set this in your browser/smartphone.
