Émile Gallé – Art Nouveau Hall Pendant Light in Amber Glass, c. 1890–1900
Émile Gallé (1846–1904)
Impressive French Art Nouveau hall pendant light, c. 1890–1900.
A large amber-coloured glass bowl decorated with an intricate botanical motif of flowering umbellifers, seed heads and large, deeply lobed leaves. The decoration is executed in acid-etched cameo glass in varying warm tones, characteristic of Émile Gallé's nature-inspired designs.
The glass bowl is signed Gallé and retains its original bronze rim and suspension fittings with decorative mounts in the form of swans. The original ceiling canopy is also made of bronze, while the brass chains are later replacements.
A fine example of French Art Nouveau, combining detailed glass decoration with finely worked bronze fittings.
France, c. 1890–1900.
