19th Century Philippine Baroque Style Long Table in Narra, Molave and Balayong
An elegant and refined long table crafted to an exceptional standard from rare tropical hardwoods, including narra, molave, and balayong—among the most prized timber species of the Philippines.
The tabletop is constructed using a traditional framed design, with the outer frame executed in narra wood. At the centre is a single, large slab of solid molave, offering both a lighter visual contrast and exceptional structural strength. This method of construction allows the wood to respond naturally to changes in humidity without cracking and demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship and material expertise.
The base is fitted with turned legs and a continuous stretcher, all executed in the dense and durable hardwood balayong. This construction provides excellent stability while maintaining a balanced and harmonious appearance. The gently curved, boot-shaped feet and finely profiled structure reinforce the table’s baroque character, lending it an appearance that is both light in expression and monumentally assured.
The table can be dated to the period circa 1840–1860, during the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines. Furniture from this period often reflects European baroque influence and was typically produced for monasteries, public institutions, and affluent families connected to the colonial administration.
A rare and characterful long table, suitable for use as either a dining table or a work table.
The table remains original and untouched, retaining a naturally beautiful patina.
