Large Ming-Style Calligraphy Table with Original Black-Burgundy Lacquer
Large Ming-Style calligraphy work table with original burgundy-black lacquer
From Jiangsu Province, 1800-1840.
This table is in exceptionally well-preserved original condition. The stunning black-burgundy lacquer surface has received a clear lacquer overlay, enhancing its depth and luster.
The tabletop is crafted using a classic frame-and-panel construction, designed to naturally adapt to changes in humidity. As a result, the wood expands and contracts slightly depending on the surrounding moisture levels.
Originally designed as a calligraphy table (work table), it was intended for laying out paper and practicing calligraphy, as well as other artistic purposes. However, this table type is also highly suitable as a dining table.
Note: The table—especially the tabletop—is difficult to photograph and looks significantly more beautiful in person!
