Peder Als (1725–1775)

Beautiful and atmospheric portrait of Queen Juliane Marie of Denmark (1729–1796), painted in the elegant Rococo style and attributed to the Danish court painter Peder Als.

Executed in oil on canvas, the painting depicts the queen in half-length wearing an elaborately decorated silk dress with lace and an order decoration, complemented by a ermine-trimmed royal mantle. Beside her appears the Danish royal crown, which she gently touches, emphasizing her position at the royal court.

Peder Als was one of the most important Danish portrait painters of the 18th century. He studied under Carl Gustaf Pilo, whose style had a strong influence on his work, and in 1755 he was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

The painting is executed on canvas which has at some point been relined, a common conservation procedure where an additional canvas is applied to the reverse to stabilize and preserve the original support.

The work is presented in a period gilt wooden frame, which harmonizes beautifully with the warm tones of the painting.

A closely related portrait is held in the collection of the Statens Museum for Kunst (The National Gallery of Denmark).
