Set of 5 Antique Danish Copper Measuring Jugs, 1878, Certified and Tin-Lined
A set of 5 antique "pot" copper measuring jugs, with tin-lined interiors for safe use.
Each jug is dated 1878 and stamped with three marks:
-
The Copenhagen city mark (two towers),
-
An official verification mark ("C5") certifying volume accuracy,
-
And the production year "1878" in an oval frame.
At that time, such items were strictly regulated to ensure honest trade; customers were guaranteed the correct quantities of mead, beer, and other goods.
This set consists of copper measuring jugs in the traditional Danish sizes of 2 pot, 1 pot, ½ pot, 1 pægle, and ½ pægle, reflecting historical volume standards before the introduction of the metric system. One "pot" (an old Danish unit of volume) equals approximately 0.9681 liters (roughly 1 US quart).
One pot was divided into 4 "pægle" (smaller measures), and 2 pots made up one "kande" (jug).
When Denmark adopted the metric system in 1907, the traditional "pot" unit was officially discontinued.
