19th Century Anglo-Chinese Campaign Chest Desk in Camphor Wood
Anglo-Chinese military campaign chest desk crafted in solid camphor wood. Preserved in original condition and carefully repolished to maintain its rich patina.
The chest is constructed in three sections, making it easily transportable—a defining feature of campaign furniture.
The top section features a writing surface with one long drawer and three smaller drawers beneath, the central one fitted with a pull-out writing slide lined in original green leather. The two lower sections provide additional drawers. All drawers are dovetail-jointed, and some retain original Chinese characters to the interior.
The structure is reinforced with brass corner mounts, both protective and decorative in function.
Fitted with original brass hardware, carrying handles, and campaign locks, reflecting a high level of craftsmanship and the use of quality materials throughout.
The piece was likely custom-made for a British officer and produced in Hong Kong around 1888, at a time when the city was a British colony and a key center for Anglo-Chinese campaign furniture for the British Empire.
