Large Baroque Lion Sculpture in French Limestone, circa 1700
A monumental Baroque lion sculpture carved in French limestone around 1700. Standing at 105 cm in height, the piece has an imposing architectural presence, beautifully balanced by its soft weathered surface and rich natural patina developed over centuries. The lion holds a ring in its mouth — a traditional symbol of strength, protection, and nobility.
The sculpture comes from a historic private estate on the Danish countryside near Stevns, south of Copenhagen, where it once stood at the entrance staircase of the main residence surrounded by romantic landscaped gardens with canals, fountains, bridges, and classical garden architecture.
Its combination of scale, age, provenance, and beautifully aged limestone gives the piece exceptional decorative value, equally suited for a grand interior, orangery, courtyard, or formal garden setting.
A rare and atmospheric antique sculpture with timeless European character.
