Impressive and unusually large female bust, in natural size, carved in black granite by the German sculptor Christoph Voll (1897–1939).

The bust depicts a young woman with a calm, contemplative expression. The face is modelled with remarkable confidence and restraint, drawing the viewer's attention to the sitter's inner character rather than individual details. The softly rounded forms contrast beautifully with the raw, unfinished stone deliberately retained around the shoulders and reverse. This dialogue between the finely polished surfaces and the natural stone gives the sculpture a striking sense of materiality while demonstrating the artist's exceptional understanding of his medium.

The work possesses a remarkable balance between monumental presence and quiet intimacy. Christoph Voll is regarded as one of the most important German sculptors of the first half of the twentieth century. His sculptures combine monumental simplicity with exceptional psychological depth, placing the personality of the sitter above naturalistic likeness. When Voll paid an unannounced visit to Edvard Munch in Norway, Munch was deeply impressed by his work and praised it for its "primitive strength and profound inner calm"—a description that perfectly captures the qualities of this remarkable sculpture.

Voll died in 1939 at the age of only forty-two, leaving behind a relatively small body of work. Today his sculptures are represented in important museum and public collections throughout Germany.

Provenance

This sculpture comes directly from the descendants of Christoph Voll and has remained within the artist's family collection.

According to the family's account, the bust formed part of a larger group of Voll's sculptures intended for an exhibition in Oslo in 1939, organised with the support of Edvard Munch. The exhibition was cancelled following the outbreak of the Second World War, as there were fears that the works might be confiscated by the Nazi regime, which condemned much of Germany's modern art. Instead, the collection was brought to safety in Denmark, where it was stored in the cellars beneath Christiansborg Palace throughout the war before eventually being returned to the artist's family.

This direct provenance from Christoph Voll's descendants adds an exceptional historical and collector's significance to the work.
