"John the Baptist"
A wood carved baroque figure depicting John the Baptist (also called Johannes the Baptist) with original polychrome paint. Height: 152 cm.
Originates from a Catholic Cathedral in the Philippines, c. 1750-1770.
Hand-carved in Balayong hard wood, exposing the well executed workmanship. The polychrome paint is displaying a wonderful, natural aged patina.
The sculpture is in original and overall good condition and shows some age cracks and small defects (see photo).
Philippines 18th century.
The Philippines was a Spanish colony from 1565-1598. The figure here is therefore in typical Spanish style.
