A Pair of Danish Rococo Mirrors, Crafted by Court Cabinetmaker Dietrich Schäffer, circa 1740-1750
An elegant and well-preserved pair of Rococo mirrors with original faceted mirror glass set in beautifully carved frames.
The richly decorated frames are crafted in the classic Rococo style, featuring openwork scrolls and floral rocaille carvings. The mirrors retain traces of their original gilding, which has mostly worn away over time, revealing the underlying gesso. This creates a strikingly raw and textural appearance that blends historic elegance with a modern, minimalist aesthetic, making them a perfect fit for contemporary interiors.
One mirror is missing a small portion of its wood carvings at the top, but these signs of aging only add to the historical character and aesthetic appeal of the pieces.
Dietrich Schäffer – One of the Leading Danish Court Cabinetmakers of the 18th Century
Dietrich Schäffer (also known as Diderik Schæffer) was one of the most prominent cabinetmakers in 18th-century Denmark. Originally from Germany, he became a member of the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild in 1732 and was later appointed as a court cabinetmaker. Schäffer was renowned for his exquisite Rococo-style craftsmanship, creating furniture and interiors for the royal court and aristocracy.
His works can be found in Christiansborg Palace (home to the Danish Parliament), Württemberg Mansion (a historic aristocratic residence in Copenhagen), and the Prince’s Mansion (now part of the National Museum of Denmark), where his superior craftsmanship is still admired today. Items from Schäffer’s workshop are rare on the market, and his creations are regarded as particularly valuable collector’s pieces.
